Ron Shipmon has spent more than two decades working across the contemporary, emerging, and digital art markets, advising private and corporate clients in the United States and internationally.

His career has moved across several parts of the art world—appraisal, collecting, curatorial practice, galleries, art advisory, and arts writing—giving him a perspective shaped not by a single role, but by understanding how those roles intersect.

For a decade, Shipmon served as curator of the GE Capital and Financial Guaranty Insurance Company art collections. His work extended well beyond selecting art. He advised on contemporary and emerging markets, collection management, archival practices, installation, insurance, deaccession, and the broader stewardship of significant corporate collections.

At Colgate-Palmolive, he developed the company’s first in-house exhibition program, with a particular focus on diversity and expanding the range of artists represented within the corporate environment.

His gallery experience was formed on both sides of the Atlantic. In London, Shipmon managed Leinster Fine Art and Leinster Contemporary Art. He later founded The American Gallery in New York.

The American Gallery grew out of something he had observed firsthand: talented artists from diverse ethnic, racial, and social backgrounds remained significantly underrepresented in mainstream commercial venues. The gallery was created to bring greater visibility to artists whose work had too often existed outside those traditional channels.

That commitment to underrepresented artists has remained central to Shipmon’s curatorial, advisory, and writing practices. His contributions to the visual arts community have been recognized by the Manhattan Borough President, NY1 News, which named him a New Yorker of the Week, and the Castillo Theatre, which honored his support of the visual arts.

Shipmon’s perspective on art has also extended beyond galleries and collections.

As a regular guest commentator on WLIB Radio’s Wake Up New York, he discussed contemporary art and New York’s cultural landscape. He has been profiled by national television and print media, including CNN and CNBC, and his arts writing has appeared in numerous regional and national publications.

His work as a writer brings the same questions to the page that inform his professional practice: how value is established, how reputations are built, how collections acquire meaning, how evidence shapes what can responsibly be said about an artwork, and how access and power operate within the art world.

He has contributed to publications including New Jersey Monthly, Metrosource, Washington Life, IN New York, Ranch & Coast, Arrive, Where, and other arts, culture, travel, and lifestyle publications.

In 2023, Shipmon received the NAACP David Weaver Award for Excellence in the Arts, recognizing his contribution to the visual arts and his longstanding commitment to equity and inclusion within the field.

Today, through Ron Shipmon LLC, he brings that breadth of experience to collectors, families, professional advisors, corporations, and institutions seeking informed judgment about art, value, collections, and the decisions surrounding them.
